Acer Sterculiaceum ssp. Franchettii From China this rarely planted midlevel maple prefers acid soil. New leaves are bluish purple and covered in downy hairs, red in fall. The large rounded leaves are quite distinctive. -20F $25

Halesia tetraptera Var. rosea This Mt Silverbell is a beautiful small rounded Carolinean tree to 20'. It has bell-shaped pinkish white flowers in spring and prefers rich well-drained, moist, acidic soil. It is good with plantings of rhodos. -25F $25
Heptacodium miconoides Introduced from China in 1980, this multi-stemmed small tree bears small white flowers in panicles in late summer followed by dark red-purple calyces. The exfoliating bark is another attractive feature. -10F $25
Liriodendron Aureomarginata Among the tallest growing native Carolinean hardwood trees it has interesting cup-shaped flowers of orange, yellow and green. This selection has leaves with yellow to greenish yellow margins. It does not like dry compacted soil and needs a large area. -25F 8’ $95

Syringa pekinensis China Snow Rarely seen Peking Lilac Tree, this patented form from Chicago's botanic gardens has huge fragrant clusters of white bloom in June that form persistent tan fruit panicles which combine with peeling amber bark (like Acer griseum) for great winter appeal. Outstanding mid-sized tree with glossy green leaves for sun-part shade, drought and ice resistant. Z4 $95
Taxodium distichum ‘Cascade Falls’ Weeping bald cypress grows as tall as you want to stake it, haymound form if left unstaked. Graceful upright accent.   $99
Taxodium distichum Shawnee Brave Bald cypress cultivar with showy purple cones is very dense and narrow maturing to 70' by 18'. It tolerates compacted soils and swampy or dry sites. -25F $65
MAGNOLIAS
ACUMINATA Native cucumber magnolia gets its name from the shape of the fruits that develop from green to red. A magnificent large growing tree but rare. It is on the endangered list in Ontario. Does well in deep moist well drained slightly acid soils but does not tolerate extreme drought, wetness or pollution. -40F $15+
VIRGINIANA MOONGLOW This swamp magnolia reportedly grows faster blooms sooner and is hardier than the regular form. The small white blooms in May are lemon scented and the semi-evergreen leaves have silvery undersides on this very pretty smaller-growing tree. -15 $65
