Japanese cornelian cherry is a mid-sized tree of tidy rounded habit. Spherical clusters of tiny yellow flowers appear before forsythia in March. Shiny red drupes up to inch long are a fall feature. Grows well in sun or part shade in a variety of soils. The rough corrugated bark develops grey, brown, and orange patches with age. Despite its showy bark and a fruit and flower display superior to Cornus mas, it is rarely found in gardens here.;-20F
